About Us

Where it all Began:

Katie: My first memory of gardening is from my childhood backyard in Cedar Hills, UT. I remember each year when my dad would gather us to help plant the family garden, he would be greeted with groans of complaint...even from me. Happier memories of this same backyard include the sweet smells of lilacs that lined the whole north side of our house and cutting the lilacs and roses from the backyard, arranging them, and displaying them on our dinner table. Unfortunately, along with those happy memories comes the memories of earwigs dropping from the roses and skittering across the table. Yikes!! I've since learned a lot about bug management in farming.

I truly fell in love with cut flowers back in 2013. Seth and I had a tiny little family with a two year old and three year old and decided it was time to sell our townhouse and build a new house with a yard. Once the house was built, we had the huge project of putting in the yard. We, being cheap…I mean budget conscious... decided to put the yard in ourselves. We studied plants and planned out the whole yard. We worked our butts off, sometimes even after dark with head lamps on.

The next year everything was growing and thriving and we were spending SO much time together in the garden. The kids were so happy there, we all were so happy there. Our family fell in love with gardening veggies.

The new yard was thriving and everything was growing and blooming. At this time, I was a stay at home mom. One random day I needed a break from the craziness of kids and needed the peace of outdoors. We went outside and I decided to cut some of our blooming hydrangeas. I then noticed what else was blooming and all of a sudden I had spent an hour in a “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” type situation, moving from plant to plant collecting a gorgeous bouquet. The next day I went out and cut more flowers but this time I decided I would take them to neighbors. Working with flowers and brightening other's lives with them…that was happiness! I was hooked!

As our family grew and we added one more baby to the mix, we continued to love gardening, both vegetables and flowers. We loved being outside, working in the dirt with each other but most importantly, alongside our kids. In 2019, we decided to take our gardening to the next level and start The Garden Duo. Unfortunately, that plan was squashed in the blink of eye as I went from living a full and happy life to being bedridden with Lyme disease. That summer I tired to spend a tiny bit of energy harvesting and arranging the flowers we started growing before I got sick. However, the energy wasn't there and the flowers died uncut in the backyard.

After putting my life on hold for three years to fight Lyme, get treatments, and make lifestyle changes, I was finally in remission! I had a new drive for life now that I had my energy back!! After losing years of my life to Lyme, I had a new found philosophy on life: live everyday like it was my last, chase every dream, and not waste another minute of this amazing life I am so blessed to have back!

And so I started working again on my dream of owning a successful flower farm! I am the creative vision of our farm, the designer, the florist, and half of the farm hands. Seth brings the farm experience, the muscle, and the other half of the farm hands. With him by my side and the kids outside in the dirt with us, I am living MY DREAM!

Seth: Hi, I am Seth or sometimes known as The Veggie Garden Guy. I’ve been gardening pretty much since I was born. I come from hundreds of years of farming history. The earliest farmer in my family line dates back to the 1700's. He was known as The Farmer King in Germany. Farming is literally in my blood.

My love for veggie gardening started back when I was 8 years old living in the middle of nowhere, Illinois. I learned to garden from my dad and throughout the summers it was my job, along with 2 other siblings, to water, weed, tend to, and harvest our 600 square foot garden.

During my teenage summers I worked in corn and bean fields, walking miles through fields. In college I studied agricultural business. My first job out of college was in Idaho as a certified crop advisor. Basically, I diagnosed problems in farmer’s crops and sold them fertilizer to help maximize their harvests. While in Idaho, we lived in a mother-in-law apartment where I grew a garden in Rubbermaid containers because we didn’t have a yard. When we moved back to Utah we still didn’t have a yard so I grew a garden on my back porch in containers. We finally put down roots where I spent my nights and weekends working my own garden and teaching my kids to love working the land.

I spent years doing gardening consultations, helping others learn and love gardening. I have done hundreds of consultations in 12 states and have loved meeting gardeners around the United States. My favorite part of consultations was seeing the “I CAN DO THIS!” moments.

In 1893, my great, great grandfather bought a 120 acre farm in Illinois. My dad still farms it today and my brothers and I will be continuing that legacy on. Being able to hold that soil and know it has been worked by my own family for that long is humbling, brings me pride and happiness. Farming and gardening is in my bones and is who I am. I am so happy to now be sharing this farming legacy with my kids through flower farming!

Our Farm: Our farm is an urban micro-farm located in Saratoga Springs, UT. We currently grow thousands of flowers on under 1000 square feet but I am constantly scheming to expand to most of our yard. We grow flowers to spread joy, happiness, and hope to everyone that takes a bouquet home or gifts a bouquet to a loved one! Here's to joy, happiness, and hope!
